Singer, guitarist, author and journalist Ned Sublette was born in 1951 in Lubbock, Texas and raised in Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico. He moved to New York in 1976, making his mark playing across various music scenes, from experimental rock to cow-punk to Latin music. A trip to Cuba in 1990 proved hugely significant for him, deepening his love for and knowledge of Cuban music. On his return he founded the label Qbadisc which was instrumental in introducing contemporary Cuban music to the US, including rumba masters Los Muñequitos De Matanzas and timba innovators NG La Banda. He was also senior co-producer at Afropop Worldwide for 7 years. His 1999 debut album Cowboy Rumba was an explosive and original combination of Texan country music with Cuban, Dominican and Puerto Rican rhythms, including a killer merengue version of ‘Ghost Riders In The Sky’. Sublette returned to Cuba many times and in 2007 published his in-depth study Cuba and its music: from the first drums to the mambo. He went on to write a history of New Orleans: The world that made New Orleans: from Spanish silver to Congo Square (2008) followed by the memoir The Year Before The Flood: A Story of New Orleans in 2009. // REVIEWS
